Virtual business card, defined.
A virtual business card is a business card that exists only on screens: a web page, app profile or phone wallet pass carrying your name, job, contact details and links, shared by QR code, link, NFC tap or message. Saving it puts you in someone’s contacts. It is another name for a digital business card.

- Same thing as
- A digital business card. “Virtual” is the older word, from when “virtual” meant anything online.
- Not to be confused with
- A virtual corporate card: in finance, a payment card number issued with no plastic, used for company spending. Same words, different industry.
- Needs
- Nothing on the other person’s phone beyond a camera and a browser, if it is shared as a web page.
More than paper can carry.
A virtual card has room a 3.5 by 2 inch card does not. What matters is that each item is one tap from being used.
| Item | On a paper card | On a virtual card |
|---|---|---|
| Name, title, company | Printed | Shown, and saved to contacts with one tap |
| Phone and email | Typed in by hand later | Tap to call, tap to email, or saved with the contact |
| Website and social links | One or two, as text | As many as you like, each a live link |
| A photo | Rarely | Usually, so they remember the face |
| Changes after you hand it over | Reprint | Edit once; everyone with the link sees it |

This is a real pass drawn by the code that issues Cardr cards, for an example holder. Its QR opens a page explaining how the swap works.

Common questions.
Is a virtual business card the same as a digital business card?
Yes. The two names describe the same thing: a business card that lives on screens and is shared by QR code, link or tap. “Digital” is the more common word today.
Do I need an app to have one?
Not with every product. Some need an app on your phone to show the card; a card issued as a Wallet pass lives in the Wallet app that iPhone already has, and the person you meet needs only a camera.
Is a virtual business card the same as a virtual card from my bank?
No. A virtual corporate card is a payment card number with no plastic, issued for company spending. A virtual business card shares your contact details. They only share a name.
Can my company give everyone one?
Yes. Most services sell a team plan. Cardr Teams gives each person their own card in one company design, managed from one place, with a 30-day trial that needs no card.
Can I print a virtual business card?
You can print its QR code on a paper card, a badge or a sign. The code opens the virtual card, which you can keep editing after the paper is printed.
