Electronic business card: the two things it means.

An electronic business card is a business card in digital form, shared by email, link, QR code or tap instead of on paper. In Microsoft Outlook the phrase is also the name of a feature: an Electronic Business Card is a contact laid out like a paper card and sent as a .vcf file.

Microsoft also lets you add it to your email signature, so each message carries your contact as a .vcf attachment.

What the recipient gets is a vCard. In Outlook it opens as a contact with your chosen layout; on a phone, or in Gmail or Apple Mail, it opens as an ordinary contact file. The layout is an Outlook view, so only Outlook users see the card design. Everyone else sees the fields.

Questions

Common questions.

How do I create an Electronic Business Card in Outlook?

Microsoft’s instructions start from a contact: open it, choose the card layout and fields, then save. You can then send it in a message or add it to your signature. The steps are in the Microsoft Support article linked below.

Can someone without Outlook open it?

Yes. It is a .vcf file, so iPhone, Android, Gmail and Apple Mail all import the contact. They see the fields, not the Outlook card layout.

Is an electronic business card the same as a digital business card?

In everyday use, yes. The only time the words differ is in Outlook, where Electronic Business Card is the name of its own .vcf feature.

Is an e-business card free?

Outlook’s comes with Outlook. Digital business card services vary; Cardr’s card is free forever, with Pro as a paid add-on for follow-ups.
