It survives no signal

A pass is stored on the device. It opens in a basement bar, on the Underground, in an exhibition hall where two thousand phones are fighting over one mast, and on a phone in aeroplane mode. A hosted card in those conditions is a spinner. The scene this product is actually used in is a busy room with bad reception, so this is not a small point.

It cannot get lost

A screenshot of a QR code goes into the camera roll and is under forty other photos by Friday. A pass goes into Wallet, which most people open several times a week for a coffee card or a train ticket, and stays in a short list of things they deliberately kept.

It corrects itself

This is the one paper can never match. Passes support push updates, so editing your card updates the pass in your Wallet, and your page changes with it. Change employer and the code you show, the link you have sent and the page their saved contact links to already say the new thing. A printed card is wrong from the day your number changes and stays wrong forever.

How to add your business card to Apple Wallet.

About a minute, on the phone you are already holding.

  1. Pick your address. Your card lives at cardr.co/yourname. It is first come, first served, and it doubles as the link you give out everywhere else.
  2. Fill in the card. Name, role, company, a number and an email, plus any links you want on it. The preview redraws as you type.
  3. Tap Add to Apple Wallet. Safari hands the pass to Wallet and it appears with your other passes. There is no app to install. The pass stays with you; it is what you show.
  4. Hand it over. Show the QR code, send the link, or tap an NFC tag you already own. Your card opens on their phone, and Save puts you in their contacts. Then they can send you their email or number.

If you later change job, edit the card once. Your pass and your page update, and the same QR code opens the new details.

Can you put a business card in Apple Wallet?

Yes. Apple Wallet accepts any correctly signed pass file, and a business card is a valid use of the generic pass type. Cardr issues your card as a signed .pkpass, which is the same file format Apple uses for boarding passes, event tickets and loyalty cards. It sits in the Wallet app alongside them.

What is a .pkpass file?

A .pkpass is a small signed archive containing the pass content, its layout and its images, signed with a certificate issued by Apple. The signature is what makes Apple Wallet accept it. It also means a pass cannot be edited by anyone other than the issuer, which is why a Wallet pass is harder to fake than a screenshot of a card.

Does the pass work without signal?

Yes. Once a pass is in Wallet it is stored on the device, so it opens on the Tube, in a basement, at a venue with no reception, and on a phone in aeroplane mode. Its QR code renders locally. Their phone still needs signal to open your page, so for a room with none, open your No signal code at cardr.co/me/code once beforehand. It stays saved on your phone, and it carries your contact itself, so their camera adds you with no signal on either phone. Sending their details back waits for signal.

Does the pass update when I change my details?

Yes. Passes support push updates, so when you edit your card, the pass in your Wallet updates itself, and your page at cardr.co/yourname changes at the same moment. Change your number, your job title or your company and anyone who scans your code or opens your link sees the new version. The person you meet saves a contact rather than the pass; it does not change by itself, but it links back to your page.

Do I need an app to add it?

No. Apple Wallet is preinstalled on every iPhone and cannot be deleted, and adding your pass is a system-level action from Safari. The person you meet needs no app either: your QR code opens your card as a web page, and they save you to their contacts from there.

Does this work on Android or in Google Wallet?

Yes. On an Android phone that runs Google Wallet (Android 9 or later), your card goes into Google Wallet, free, with the same QR code and the same automatic updates as the Apple Wallet pass. It comes in your design’s colours, with its artwork as a picture on designs that have one, such as Intaglio and Aurora. The people you meet are not affected either way: on Android or iPhone alike, they open your page from the QR code or the link, save you to their contacts and take part in the exchange. Nobody you meet gets a pass on any phone. It is yours.

Is an Apple Wallet business card better than a QR code?

They are not alternatives; the pass contains a QR code. The difference is where it lives. A pass sits in Wallet, works offline, and updates itself. A bare QR code in your photos does none of those things and gets buried by the next screenshot you take.
