Digital business card vs vCard.

A vCard is a contact file: a fixed copy of your details that a phone saves into its address book. A digital business card is a page or Wallet pass that shows your details, stays editable at one address, and hands over a vCard when someone taps Save. The card is what you share; the vCard is what they keep.

In one line
Every good digital business card contains a vCard. A vCard on its own is a card with no page.
The deciding row
Updates. A sent vCard is fixed; a card page always shows the latest.
Where the vCard wins
It needs no service, works offline, and every phone and mail app reads it.

The vCard inside a digital business card

The vCard a card hands over.

When someone taps Save on a Cardr card, this is the file their phone receives, shown for an example holder. It is an ordinary vCard 3.0, with one addition at the end.

Example: the vCard Cardr’s Save button writes, for Jordan Hale, a made-up holder. The last two lines add a link labeled “Jordan’s card” back to the card page.

That link is the bridge between the two. The saved contact is still a snapshot, but it carries the one address that stays current, so the person who saved you can always find your latest details. A vCard on its own cannot do that, because there is no page for it to point to.

When to use a vCard instead

The file is sometimes all you need.

Pick by how long the details need to stay right.

  • Loading contacts into a CRM or a new phone A vCard file It is the import format everything accepts, and nothing has to stay online.
  • A one-off: your details in an email to one person A vCard attachment Quick, private and readable everywhere. If your details change, send another.
  • Meeting people you want to keep in touch with A digital business card One scan, a card they can come back to, and a contact that links to it.
  • A QR code printed on paper A link to a card, not a vCard code The printed vCard is fixed forever and makes a dense code; a link stays short and current.

Questions

Common questions.

Is a vCard the same as a digital business card?

No, though the words are often swapped. A vCard is the contact file format. A digital business card is the card you share, which usually hands over a vCard when someone saves you.

Can a vCard be updated after I share it?

No. Each copy is fixed once imported. If you want people to see changes, share a card at an address you can edit.

Should my business card QR code hold a vCard or a link?

A link, for most people. A vCard code saves with no internet, which is a real advantage, but it is fixed when printed and makes a much denser code.

Do digital business cards use vCards?

Most do, for the Save button: it is the contact format phones import. Cardr’s Save sends a vCard 3.0 with a link back to the card.
