Digital business card vs QR code.

A QR code is a way in: a printed or on-screen pattern a camera turns into text, usually a web address. A digital business card is what opens: a page with your details, links and a Save button. Most digital cards are shared by QR code, and a QR code can also hold a contact directly.

A QR code alone: 57×57
A QR to a card: 29×29
A QR code holds
Text: a web address, a whole vCard contact, Wi-Fi details. The format is ISO/IEC 18004.
A digital card is
A page (and often a Wallet pass) you can edit, opened by a QR code, link or tap.
Where a QR alone wins
A vCard QR saves the contact with no internet and no service behind it.
What a QR code business card is

Three things “QR business card” can mean.

People ask “QR code or digital card?” when they mean one of these. Only the first is a QR code standing alone.

KindWhat scanning doesAfter your details change
A vCard QR code on paper Offers to save the contact, even offline Wrong until reprinted
A link QR code on paper Opens your digital card Right: you edit the card
A QR code on your phone or Wallet pass Opens your digital card Right, and the pass can update too

What is inside a business card QR code

What goes inside decides how it scans.

Both generated on this page. The left holds an example contact, the right a card’s address.

  • A QR code to a card Only the card’s address

The contact code needs 57×57 squares and the address 29×29. A card behind the code lets the code stay small however much the card says.
QR code on a Wallet pass

The QR is part of the card.

On a Wallet pass the two stop being alternatives: the code is how the card is shared, and the pass is how you carry it.

Example: a Cardr pass. Its QR code holds one short address; the scan opens the card on any phone.
When a QR code alone is enough

A QR code alone is enough when.

Pick by where the code lives and how long it lives there.

  • A badge or a one-day event, with poor signal A vCard QR code It saves the contact with no connection, and a one-day badge will not outlive your details.
  • Cards you will hand out for a year or more A QR code to a digital card The printed code never changes while the card behind it does.
  • Meeting people with your phone in your hand A digital card on a Wallet pass The code is in Wallet, a double-click of the side button away when that Wallet setting is on, opens with no signal on your side, and updates when you edit the card.

Questions

Common questions.

Is a QR code a digital business card?

A QR code that holds a vCard works as a very simple one: scanning it saves the contact. Most digital business cards are web pages, and the QR code is how they are opened.

Do I need a digital business card if I have a QR code?

Not if a fixed contact is enough. A card earns its place when your details change, when you want links and a photo, or when you want the other person to be able to send their details back.

Can a QR code business card work offline?

A vCard QR code saves the contact offline. A code that opens a page needs a connection on the scanner’s phone; a Wallet pass shows its code with no signal on yours.

Which QR code is best for a business card?

A short link to a card you can edit: it makes a coarse code that scans in dim light and stays right after you print it.
