LinkedIn message after meeting someone Two hundred characters, one detail.

A connection note is shorter than this paragraph. That is enough room for where you met and one thing they said, and nothing else.

After meeting someone, send a LinkedIn connection request with a note that names where you met and one specific thing they said, in under 200 characters. That is LinkedIn’s limit, and a free account can add a note to only three invitations a month. Save anything longer, and anything with an attachment or a date in it, for a message once they accept or for email. Six examples below, by situation, each with its character count.

The limits LinkedIn sets.

Two hundred characters a note. On a free account, a note on three invitations a month; Premium members can add one to every invitation.

Prices checked on 23 September 2026. Read off each vendor’s own live page that day and quoted, not remembered. If one has moved, tell us and we will correct it.

Both numbers are from LinkedIn’s own help page on personalising invitations: each message can be up to 200 characters, a free account can personalise up to three connection requests a month, and Premium members can personalise all of them. The same page says invitations sent from “People You May Know” on mobile cannot carry a note at all, so go to the person’s profile instead.

  • On a computer: open their profile, select Connect, then Add a note.
  • On a phone: open their profile, tap the More icon, then Personalize invite.

Three a month is the constraint that matters after an event. If you met eight people, spend the notes on the three conversations that were going somewhere, and connect with the rest without one. A request with no note from someone they met yesterday is still recognisable; a note wasted on a stranger is not coming back until next month.

Six notes, by situation.

Each one names where you met and one detail, and fits in the limit with room to spare. Replace every bracket; a note with generic brackets reads as a mass invite.

These are examples to adapt, not people we met. Every bracket is a placeholder of roughly the same length as what goes in it, but a long event name will eat your spare characters quickly, so count again after you fill it in.

Notice what is missing: no pitch, no calendar link, no “I’d love to pick your brain”. A connection note has one job, which is to make them press Accept. The follow-up proper comes after, in a message or an email, and it follows the same rules as any other: short, specific, and a small ask or none.

After they accept.

If there is anything to say beyond hello, say it in a message once they accept. Keep it to three or four sentences and one detail from the conversation.

An accepted request is not a follow-up; it is permission to send one. The message that follows should do what a good email does: the specific thing they said, anything you promised, and a small ask. Send it within a day or two of meeting, the same window as for email, because the timing matters more than the channel.

If they do not accept within a week or so, do not send a second request. Email them if you have an address, or leave it: people ignore LinkedIn invitations for all sorts of reasons that have nothing to do with you, including never opening the app.

LinkedIn or email?

Use the channel they gave you. Email wins whenever you have an address and something to send; LinkedIn wins when a name and a company are all you have.

Which channel for the follow-up?

  • They gave you an email address Email Room for the detail, an attachment and a date. Connect on LinkedIn as well if you like.
  • They said “find me on LinkedIn” LinkedIn, with a note They chose the channel. A note naming where you met, then a message once they accept.
  • You only have a name and company LinkedIn, with a note The usual way back to someone whose details you did not get. Spend one of your notes on it.
  • They said to message their mobile WhatsApp or text Two lines, no subject. A number given with “just message me” is an invitation.
  • You want to leave with their details Swap them at the event A two-way exchange means you never have to guess the channel afterwards.

Most people do both, and that is fine: a connection request so you stay visible to each other, and an email for the actual follow-up. What does not work is using the connection note as the follow-up. Two hundred characters is room to say you remember them, not room to be useful.

Where Cardr fits.

Cardr gets you their email or number at the event, so LinkedIn becomes a choice rather than the only way back to someone. It does not write or send LinkedIn messages.

Being exact about what it does:

  • Your LinkedIn on your card. Add your LinkedIn to your Cardr card and it goes into the contact the other person saves when they scan your QR, so they can find you without searching.
  • Their details back to you. The exchange asks for their name, email and phone, not their LinkedIn, so you leave with a way to email them. Note where you met in one sentence and Cardr files it against the contact, free.
  • Drafts, not LinkedIn. On Pro, Cardr drafts follow-ups by email, WhatsApp or text from your note. It does not draft connection notes or post to LinkedIn; you can copy a draft and cut it down if you want to.
  • Reminders stop when you have written. If you followed up on LinkedIn, press “Mark followed up” on the contact and Cardr stops reminding you about them.

The routine this all fits into is in the professional follow-up guide.

Questions, answered.

What should I write in a LinkedIn message after meeting someone?

Where you met and one specific thing they said, in under 200 characters. For example: “Hi [name], good to meet you at [event] yesterday. I’ve been thinking about what you said about [their problem]. Would be good to stay in touch.”

What is the character limit for a LinkedIn connection note?

200 characters, according to LinkedIn’s help page on personalising invitations, checked on 23 September 2026.

How many personalised invitations can I send on LinkedIn for free?

LinkedIn’s help page says a free account can add a personal note to up to three connection requests a month. Premium members can add one to every request.

Should I connect on LinkedIn or send an email after networking?

If you have their email and something to send, email. If you only have their name and company, connect on LinkedIn with a note. Many people do both: connect to stay visible, email for the actual follow-up.

Is it OK to send a LinkedIn request without a note?

Yes, to someone you met recently, especially if you have used your three free notes for the month. Your name and photo will usually be enough for them to place you within a day or two.

How soon should I connect on LinkedIn after meeting someone?

The same day or the next. Within a day or two they still remember the conversation, which is what makes a short note work.
