Add a signature in Gmail.

Make the signature here, then paste it into Gmail on a computer. About two minutes, and the formatting survives because you paste the rendered signature rather than the source.

In Gmail on a computer: Settings, See all settings, scroll to Signature on the General tab, Create new, paste, choose it under Signature defaults, then Save Changes at the very bottom of the page. The last step is the one most often missed.

Everything is optional except your name. Leave a field blank and the row disappears.

Put your name in and the signature appears here.

Nothing is stored. No images and no web fonts unless you choose them, so it renders the same in every mail client.

Step by step

Into Gmail, in 6 steps.

Labels are quoted from Google’s own help pages, checked 2026-09-22.

  1. 01

Make it and press Copy signature

Fill in the generator on this page, choose a layout and a colour, and press Copy signature. That puts the rendered signature on your clipboard, not the HTML source.

  2. 02

    Open See all settings

In Gmail on a computer, click Settings (the gear at the top right), then See all settings.

  3. 03

    Create a new signature

On the General tab, scroll down to Signature and click Create new. Give it a name; only you see it.

  4. 04

    Paste into the box

Click into the signature box and paste with Cmd+V on a Mac or Ctrl+V on Windows. Paste the copied signature, not the HTML.

  5. 05

    Make it the default

Under Signature defaults, choose it for For new emails use and, if you want it on replies too, On reply/forward use.

  6. 06

    Save Changes

Scroll to the very bottom of the page and click Save Changes. The button is a long way below the signature box, and leaving without it discards the signature.

The Gmail app on a phone has its own Mobile Signature setting, which is plain text. If it is switched on, it is used instead of this one when you send from the app.

A Google Workspace admin can add a footer below your signature; that is set by your organisation, not here.
